Pista Murg (Pista Chicken, Chicken with Pistachio)

Pista Murg is a delicious and very popular Indian recipe served as a side dish. This dish is also known as Pista Chicken or Chicken with Pistachio. However, apart from the regular way of making, this dish can be easily prepared in microwave. Here I am going to tell you both of the ways.

Saute recipe


• Boneless Chicken 400 gm (cut into 1”pieces)
• Pistachios ½ cup
• Curd 2-3 tablespoons
• Lemon juice 1 tablespoon
• Green chili paste 1-2 tablespoons
• Onion 2 (medium size)
• Ginger paste 1 tablespoon
• Garlic paste 1 tablespoon
• Freshly chopped coriander ½ cup
• Green cardamom 2-3 (crushed)
• Sugar 1 tablespoon
• Salt to taste
• Coriander powder 2 teaspoons
• Garam masala ½ teaspoon
• White pepper powder ½ teaspoon
• Oil as needed
• Freshcream ½ cup
• Pistachios (sliced) for garnishing


Make the onion paste

Peel and cut onions into four pieces. Boil them in 1 cup of water for 2-3 minutes. Drain, cool and grind them to a fine paste.

Make a paste of pistachios

Soak the pistachios in hot water for 10 minutes. Then peel it and grind it to make a smooth paste.

Marinate the chicken pieces

To marinate the chicken, take a big bowl and add the chicken pieces along with curd, lemon juice and green chilli paste in it and give a good mix. Keep it aside for an hour.

Fry the marinated chicken

Heat some oil in a pan. When the oil turns hot add the marinated chicken into the pan and fry it till the chicken pieces become light brown. Then keep it aside.

Make the gravy

Now, in a pan heat some oil, saute the crushed green cardamoms and fry it. Add onion paste and saute it for 4-5 minutes until dry and the oil separates. Now add the ginger and garlic paste and fry for a minute. Add coriander powder, white pepper powder, salt and mix well. Stir in the pistachio paste and sugar and cook until the oil separates.

Add the chicken pieces

Now add the pre-fried chicken pieces and a cup of water. Then add the freshly chopped coriander. Cook it in a medium flame with cover till done.

Add fresh cream and garam masala

When the gravy becomes thick and little dry, add fresh cream and sprinkle some garm masala and then remove it from heat.

Better serve with roti or rice

Garnish it with sliced pistachios and serve hot with rice or roti.


Microwave recipe


• Chicken 400 gm (cut into 1” pieces)
• Onions 2 ( medium size) cut intob4 pieces
• Pistachios ½ cup
• Milk ½ cup

Paste (grind together)

• Green chilli 2 (roughly chopped)
• Freshly chopped coriander ½ cup
• Ginger 1”piece
• Garlic 4-5 cloves
• Coriander powder 2 teaspoons
• White pepper powder ½ teaspoon
• Salt to taste
• Oil as needed


1. Put 1 tablespoon oil and chicken in a microwave based bowl. Mix it well and grind for 8 minutes
2. Peel and cut each onion into 4 pieces. Take a microwave safe dish and add onion pieces, pistachios and add 1 cup of water in it and microwave covered for 6 minutes. Cool slightly. Peel the skin of pistachios.
3. Now grind the boiled onion pieces and the green pistas along with the water andvall other ingredients written under ‘Paste’ to make a fine green paste.
4. Keep the prepared paste in a microwave safe dish and microwave for 5 minutes.
5. Now add ½ cup of water, a small pinch of sugar and chicken and microwave for 3 minutes. Keep it aside till serving time.
6. At serving time, add ½ cup milk to get a thick gravy. Microwave for 2 min. Now its ready to serve. Serve hot with rice or roti.
